Authorities in Jackson County are warning residents about a phone scam going around.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department says that the scammer will call the victim and identify themselves as “James Davis,” a Jackson County Deputy, and says that the victim should call “Shawn Woods” at the IRS at phone number 202-864-1673.

When the victim calls that number, they are instructed to send money in the form of a money gram immediately or risk being arrested. Threats of liens on the victim’s home, car, and 401K are also given.

When the scammer calls the victims, their caller ID shows the Jackson Co. Sheriff’s Dept. non-emergency number.
