Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is encouraging families to check the state’s sex offender registry before children go trick-or-treating.
In a news release Friday, Madigan said the registry can help parents map out a safe trick-or-treating route. Illinois law bars child sex offenders from giving out candy on Halloween. Some sex offenders may also be prohibited from having their porch lights on as a condition of their parole or probation.
Madigan’s office says there are more than 28,500 registered sex offenders in Illinois. The office conducted compliance checks on sexually violent persons in advance of Halloween.
The offender registry can be found from the Illinois State Police website. It includes a map that is searchable by address.
