The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs says 50 residents of its Quincy veterans home have been sickened by Legionnaires’ disease, but there are no new deaths to report.

Seven veterans home residents and a Quincy resident have died from an infectious disease outbreak first reported last week after an initial case at the home in early August.

The veterans agency’s daily update Friday noted that no residents of the 129-year-old facility have been hospitalized or treated for symptoms of the severe form of pneumonia over the past four days.

The disease’s two-week incubation period accounts for the increase in reported illnesses even in the absence of more recent cases of people getting sickened.

Everyone sickened by Legionnaires’ disease were elderly and had underlying medical conditions that increased the risk of exposure.
