UNION COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – Snake Road will close for the seasonal migration of wildlife next week.
The rock road, a part of the Shawnee National Forest in Union County, closes to motor vehicle traffic twice a year. Over the next few weeks, reptiles and amphibians will move from their summer homes in the LaRue Swamp to their winter homes, across the road, in the limestone bluffs.
Snake Road will close Monday, September 1, and remain off limits to cars and trucks until the end of October. Foot traffic is still allowed, but visitors are remind not to touch the wildlife.
