POPE COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – Parts of the Shawnee National Forest that were scorched by a wildfire are now open to the public again.
The Forest Service says fire crews put containment lines in, mopped up the perimeter, and have cleared snags and fire-weakened trees. The recent rain also helped to put out any remaining hot spots.
The fire on Millstone Bluff in Pope County broke out Sunday and burned an estimated 86 acres. The Millstone Lake area and the nearby River to River trail have both been reopened.
