Walker broke Spring Training as a member of the Opening Day roster. That was in spite of Walker never having appeared in Triple A ball. He started the season with a historic 12-game hitting streak.
By the time the Cardinals brass made the decision to option Walker down to the Memphis Triple-A affiliate, Walker was batting .274 with a .321 on-base percentage. He had two home runs to go along with those numbers but the problem was with his strikeout rate. In 78 plate appearances, Walker had struck out 17 more times than he had walked.
The Cardinals begin a series in Pittsburgh this weekend after having Wednesday and Thursday off.
