A man from Carrier Mills was pronounced dead at the scene of a fire that occurred early Thursday morning.

21 year-old Ja Shawn Tate was pronounced dead from smoke inhalation at 4:15 in the morning after a fire broke out the corner of Washington and Mill street. The fire is still under investigation by the coroner’s office.

Sources said in an update that Tate initially escaped the fire, which reportedly started as a kitchen fire. They say the Ja Shawn Tate went back into the house to save a young boy who was  in his bedroom. Reports state Ja Shawn went into the house with another man, Daryl Taylor, to save the boy and only Taylor and the child made it out.

Friends and family of Tate will hold a candlelight vigil tonght at the Carrier Mills park at 7.
