WAYNE COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – A Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy has been killed in the line of duty.
The Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Sean Riley responded alone to a motorist assist on Interstate 64 at about 5:00 a.m. Wednesday. When another deputy arrived on the scene, Riley was found dead, and his squad car was missing. The vehicle was later located abandoned.
The suspect fled to the west. Police in St. Peters, Missouri say the same suspect in Deputy Riley’s death later shot and carjacked a person at a gas station in the western St. Louis suburb. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect’s car was found unoccupied in O’Fallon, Missouri.
The suspect is described as a white male, last seen wearing a light gray hoodie, backpack, and black shoes. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
