One SIU student’s viral video raised some questions concerning whether recording a police officer is illegal.

Student Matt Fedora claimed last week that he caught a Carbondale Police officer sleeping in his patrol car parked in the parking lot of St. Francis-Xavier Catholic Church.

While the video is still under investigation, Fedora accused the officer of sleeping in his car for over 3 hours.

During the recording, the accused officer tells the SIU student that it is illegal to record a police officer on camera.

Councilwoman Jane Adams states that information is false and “completely erroneous” and that no officer should threaten a citizen for exercising their right to free speech.

While the new eavesdropping bill signed by Governor Pat Quinn prohibits the recording and intercepting of private conversations without all-party consent, the law does allow citizens to record on-duty government officials- including police officers.
