SPRINGFIELD, IL. (WJPF) – It appears Governor JB Pritzker will sign a controversial gun dealer licensing bill into law.
Pritzker is expected to sign SB 337 at a ceremony at a Chicago Elementary School Thursday morning.
Former Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed a similar measure last spring. Recently, the legislature approved a new version of the bill, but kept off of Rauner’s desk with a procedural hold until Pritzker was in office.
Under the proposal, it would be illegal for retailers to sell guns without first being certified by the state. To achieve that, stores would have to be licensed by the ATF, install surveillance equipment, install anti-theft measures, and require all employees to undergo annual re-training.
A certification through the state is expected to cost retailers a maximum of $1,500.
