Following a nearly 7 hour school board meeting that spanned Thursday night into early Friday morning, the Carbondale School District has accepted the retirement of Superintendent Michael Shimshak.

The decision, effective immediately, also includes a $100,000 severance deal.

His time at the district has not been without controversy; nearly two years ago the Teacher’s Union passed a “No Confidence” vote in Shimshak citing numerous reasons including the alleged reporting of inaccurate discipline data to the school board, allegedly failing to address repeated violations of special education statutes, and creating a divisive and uncommunicative environment.

A statement released by the school boards reads in part:

“The board of education thanks Mr. Shimshak for his time, commitment and dedication toward the successful achievement and growth of our students and the community of School District No. 95”
