The Carbondale Fire Department is spreading the word about a new phone scam.

Reportedly scammers call residents asking if they have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. They then attempt to get your personal information in order to sell you that fire safety equipment.

Carbondale Fire Chief Ted Lomax says that the fire department will never call you trying to solicit money and that smoke detectors are already provided by the Carbondale Fire Department free of charge.
