The Carbondale City Council voted Tuesday night to rezone the business district between Main and Walnut Streets from a secondary to a primary business zone.
Current owners of property in that area will be grandfathered in, and will be allowed to operate as non-conforming structures.
Only when the current owner sells or redevelops the property will they have to conform to the new zoning code.
Also at that meeting last night, the council soften its stance on advertising signage in the city.
Previously, business owners were not allowed to use inflatable, wind-propelled, or motorized signage of any kind.
Those are allowed now, with restrictions on height, proximity to the road, and how long they can be displayed.
