An inmate is dead after harming himself in a Jefferson County Jail.

Early December 20th around 3:00am, a member of the jail staff found 27 year old Jacob Hunsell of Waltonville, unconscious and unresponsive after an attempt to harm himself.

The employee, along with other correctional officers, quickly responded and EMS personnel were dispatched to the jail.

After EMS arrived on scene, they transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Illinois State Police were called to investigate.
