Carbondale Community High School alum Zane Richards will represent the United States on the 2023 Freestyle Wrestling World Team in the 57 KG class at the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia this September.
Richards swept Thomas Giman in a best-2-of-3 contest to lock in his spot on the roster.
The Terriers alum will have the opportunity to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics in Serbia this September. If he is one of the four medalists in his weight class he will snatch one of the 90 quotas afforded to the event.
There will also be a match between the losers of the bronze medal matches in each weight class and the winner of that bout will earn the final quota in each weight class.
The dates for the tournament are subject to change from the original September 16 to 24 as it clashes with the Asian Games which are scheduled to begin on September 23 in Hangzhou, China.
The World Championships were scheduled to be held in Russia but since International Olympic Committee recommended sanctions on the nation, it became ineligible to host.
