UNION COUNTY, Ill (WJPF) – One person was killed, another was hurt in the four vehicle crash Monday near the Union-Alexander County Line.

It happened at about 9:30 a.m. on Route 3.

Illinois State Police say Catherine Newell, 53, of Grand Tower, was driving an SUV northbound when she crossed the centerline. Her vehicle first side-swiped a pickup truck and a tractor trailer following behind before hitting a second pickup truck head on.

The driver of the pickup truck hit head-on died of their injuries. Catherine Newel was flown from the scene with serious injuries. The drivers of the side-swiped vehicles were not hurt.

Route 3 was closed for over 4 hours while emergency crews were on the scene.
