BELKNAP, Ill. (WJPF) – A Madison County man has been arrested, accused of domestic battery, arson, and fighting with police.
Just before 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a home in Belknap after a report that two 75-year-olds had been assaulted.
When police arrived at the home, they say 45-year-old John Shimchick resisted officers and threw things at them. Police used their tasers in an attempt to subdue Shimchick with little success. Shimchick then barricaded himself on the second floor of the home and started multiple fires, trying to drive police from the home. The fires were put out by police and, after about a two hour stand-off, Shimchick was taken into custody. He was charged with aggravated domestic battery, but police say more charges are expected.
It’s not the first time Shimchick has been in trouble with the law. On January 4, Shimchick allegedly injured several people at a home in South Roxana and attacked responding police officers with a knife. Police shot Shimchick who was taken to a hospital and then released.
