MT. VERNON, Ill. (WJPF) — Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting involving a Mt. Vernon police officer and a suspect in an armed robbery.

According to ISP, at about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday Mt. Vernon Police were dispatched for an armed robbery at a gas station in the 1800 block of South 10th Street. A preliminary investigation indicates that when the officer approached the suspect, 55-year-old Fredrick Goss of Mt. Vernon, Goss ran from the officer. A short foot chase then began. During the pursuit, gunfire was exchanged between Goss and the officer. Goss was hit by at least one bullet and then transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not hurt. 

A gun and evidence related to the robbery were recovered at the scene. Charges against Goss have not been announced.
