MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WJPF) — A Murphysboro man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for predatory criminal sexual assault.

50-year-old Jose Canela-Barreda pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, Jose Canela-Barredda sexually assaulted a 12-year-old child. DNA evidence confirmed the crime and Canela-Barreda admitted in court to committing the assault.

After his release from prison, Canela-Barreda will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
