METROPOLIS, IL. (WJPF) — A Metropolis woman has been arrested on charges that she stole 98-year-old man’s wallet.

Metropolis Police say they were called to Big John’s Grocery Store on Sunday. The 98-year-old had dropped his wallet in the store. It was picked up and stolen by 48-year-old Christina Avila. The incident was captured on the store’s surveillance system.

A Metropolis Police Officer recognized Avila from the surveillance video. Police went to her home for further questioning where she denied the theft until she was confronted with the video evidence. The stolen wallet was then found in her purse.

Avila was arrested on charges of theft of lost or mislaid property and taken to the Massac County Detention Center.
