SIU President Randy Dunn says the Carbondale campus will be feeling the financial heat this summer as it tries to figure out how to float between the end of the state’s budget year June 30 and when students – and their tuition dollars — come back to campus in August.

Dunn tells Newsradio WJPF that a round of “severe cuts” will be coming July 1.

Students pay between 30 percent and almost 50 percent of the cost to run schools, and uncertainty over the state budget is leading some students to go out of state or delay enrollment.

Jim Applegate with the Illinois State Board of Higher Ed says finances will get worse at universities around the state if fewer students show up in August.
