CARBONDALE- Hundreds of students, community members and faculty met at Faner Hall to protest the administration and student debt among other things.
A little before 10 am, the group started off campus with around 30 people. The group had multiplied as more and more people joined in as they marched onto Faner.
The protesters then marched around campus chanting, “This is what democracy looks like”, “No justice, no peace…no racist police”, and “Chop the Top”.
What was originally meant as a strike against high administration salaries, student loan debt, and the state budget impasse turned into a rally against racism and in support of equal rights.
The protest did remain peaceful. Carbondale police officers as well as campus police kept a watchful eye over the march.
University officials and authorities were proactive as the school had offered safe zones to those worried about any violence. Fortunately, no acts of violence had occurred.
