IL State Rep. Terri Bryant has introduced legislation which would strengthen the state’s Freedom of Information Act.
HB 6083, called “Molly’s Law,” would fine public bodies which choose not to comply with orders to release information through FOIA, $10,000 for each time it happens. After 30 days of non-compliance, that public body would be fined $1,000 for each day the violation continues.
Bryant was joined at a press conference on Saturday in Carbondale by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs, and Larry Young, father of Molly Young, who died in 2012. Mr. Young was recently granted access to crime scene photos of his daughter’s death after the IL Public Access Bureau said that the IL State Police and Carbondale Police had withheld information from him.
