An Iowa man was taken to the hospital after his Semi crashed with another semi on Interstate 57 in Franklin County shortly after 4 am Friday.

According to the IL State Police, 33-year old Scott Leach of Des Moines, IA was traveling northbound on I-57 near mile marker 63 when he swerved to avoid a deer, entered the median, overcorrected, and overturned his truck.

The underside of his truck was facing northbound traffic, when another semi being driven by 62-year old Patrick Shinn of Highland hit the trailer after heavy braking.

That crash ruptured Shinn’s fuel tank, causing a small spill, which was cleaned up by West Frankfort firefighters.

The northbound lanes of I-57 were closed for a few hours until cleanup was completed.

Leach was cited for violating the median.
