mississippi river

Due to recent weather, the Mississippi River may rise to a record level high.

According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River could rise higher than it was during the 1993 flood, with a record of 49.7 feet. It’s expected to crest on New Year’s Day, Friday, at 49.9 feet.

Officials will be monitoring the forecasts closely as they may change throughout this week.

The Chester bridge, which connects Missouri’s route 51 to Illinois route 150 will shut down if the water rises above 45 feet.

A meeting is held Monday where Jackson County officials will meet to discuss all response situations. While there are concerns, no evacuation order has been issued at this time. Officials are gathering additional information from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local levee commissioners.

Meanwhile, the Route 3 floodgate in Cora will close starting Monday afternoon. A complete list of all road closures is available at http://www.idot.illinois.gov/home/Comm/emergency-road-closures
