SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — An agricultural mission from Taiwan has agreed to buy Illinois corn and soybeans in 2016 and 2017.

The delegation joined Gov. Bruce Rauner and Agriculture Director Philip Nelson in signing letters of intent on Friday.

Rauner says agriculture gives Illinois “a strong position in the global economy.” He added that he looks forward to a long relationship with Taiwan so “together we can feed the world.”

The 18 members of the Taiwanese group are visiting several states on a mission of goodwill and to enhance a long-standing trade partnership with the U.S.

Taiwan officials signed letters to purchase up to $1.3 billion in U.S. soybeans and $1.2 billion in corn and related products. Illinois officials estimate the state’s share will be $133 million in soybeans and $116 million in corn.
