Top Illinois Senate Democrats are pushing to undo Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget-bill vetoes despite uncertainty about whether the House will follow their lead.
Spokeswoman Rikeesha Phelon (rih-KEE’-shuh fuh-LAHN’) said late Tuesday no final decision had been made on override after a closed-door meeting.
She says the chamber will convene at noon to consider a one-month essential-services budget Rauner also opposes.
Rauner vetoed most of the budget lawmakers sent him in June, calling it unbalanced.
Assistant Senate Majority Leader Terry Link — a Waukegan Democrat — says taxpayers want “action.”
An override requires three-fifths majorities of 36 votes in the Senate and 71 in the House.
But two House Democrats holding necessary votes told The Associated Press Tuesday they oppose the action.
That cast in doubt a unilateral Senate override.
