SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois lawmakers have approved a pilot program which would place locking devices on some pharmacy painkiller prescriptions.

Legislators in both chambers supported the measure, including a 107-0 House vote during yesterday’s overtime session. The bill now goes to Gov. Bruce Rauner for his signature.

State Rep. Mike Zalewski is a sponser. He says a more aggressive approach is needed to fight addiction and substance abuse.

The legislation calls for a one-year program run by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and participating pharmacies. Numerical locking devices resembling those used on gym lockers would be put on prescription bottles.
