SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Some Illinois lawmakers and civil libertarians worry high-tech cameras that can scan thousands of license plates an hour are gathering data that could be used to track the movements of private citizens.

But police officials say the automated license plate readers help solve crimes and enforce traffic laws.

Those concerns have brought together an unlikely alliance to try to limit how long police can keep data and how it can be used.

Conservative Republican state Rep. Peter Breen has introduced legislation that would put a 30-day limit on data collected by license plate readers. He has the backing of the Illinois American Civil Liberties Union, a group he fought unsuccessfully in court over the gay marriage issue.
