A class-action lawsuit is targeting many corrections officers across the state and claims inmates were abused at two local prisons.
The lawsuit aims to curb the actions of more than 200 DOC employees, all members of a group known as “Orange Crush”, which allegedly carried out strip searches at prisons including Menard and Big Muddy River Correctional Centers.
Allegations range from inmates being handcuffed in a painful manner, to having their heads slammed if anyone falls out of line, and segregation if they were to ask for medical assistance.
Attorneys involved with the case say these actions violate the eighth amendment of the Constitution, banning cruel and unusual punishment.
