SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Lawmakers who say red-light cameras are dishonest and do nothing to make driving safer are pushing for a ban of the recording devices in communities across Illinois.

Two proposals are awaiting action in the Illinois House. One puts a moratorium on cameras in Chicago while the second seeks a statewide ban, as seven other states have done.

The cameras are reviled by drivers, who sometimes have little ability to challenge a ticket.

Opponents in the statehouse say the cameras are merely money-makers for communities and don’t improve safety. A 2014 study commissioned by the Chicago Tribune found that city’s cameras did not improve injury-related crashes overall and might cause more crashes.

But supporters believe they make intersections safer and see them as another tool for law enforcement officials.
