A single food safety agency is the goal of legislation being pushed by Senator Dick Durbin.
Officials say the Food Safety Act of 2015 would make it easier for food companies to comply with federal food safety standards.
The bill would modernize federal food safety laws to protect public health, transfer and consolidate all food safety authorities, and help families hurt by foodborne illness.
If the bill passes, the agency would be headed by a Food Safety Administrator appointed by the President.
