CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Coal miners will get a chance to learn how to react to emergencies without setting foot in a coal mine.

Southeastern Illinois College and Illinois Eastern Community College are collaborating on a coal mining simulator. It will give those who work in one of the most dangerous occupations in the country a chance to train for emergencies in a place that looks and feels like an actual coal mine.

The simulator will have features such as an imitation-smoke system and a control center where coordinators can monitor what is happening.

The two schools received at least $380,000 in grants to build the simulated coal mine. It will be built at SIC’s campus in Harrisburg.
