SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Michael Frerichs says he won the race for Illinois state treasurer by about 9,600 votes.
The State Senator from Champaign met with reporters Wednesday just hours after Republican Tom Cross conceded the neck-and-neck contest about two weeks after Election Day.
Frerichs benefited from late-arriving mail-in and provisional ballots in a race that earlier this week was separated by fewer than 400 votes out of 3.5 million cast. The Illinois State Board of Elections meets to certify election results on Nov. 30.
