In a letter addressed to the Herrin City Council. Herrin Mayor Vic Ritter has resigned.

Ritter cites health complications as the reason for his departure, and said his decision was made after spending significant time with his family.

Ritter had been working with the city of Herrin since 1979. He took over the mayoral office in 1999 on an interim basis at first after the death of former Ed Quaglia
