A cultivation center for medical marijuana is being planned for Pinckneyville. If a group of investors from around the area can get one of 22 state licenses, the center is planned to be put inside the former TUMS factory.
According to WSIL-TV, investors believe that a cultivation center would be beneficial for the local economy, and that the building has potential to grow.
The Pinckneyville City Council voted 4-1 in favor of making a deal with SI Farmacy, the company planning the project.
Under the plan, the group would receive $200,000 to make upgrades to the factory and then $300,000 after getting the licenses. A percentage of marijuana sales would later pay back that money and more.
SI Farmacy is predicting more than 30 new jobs to start out.
