Makanda, Ill. – Police in Jackson County are investigating a fatal wreck.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s office says a burned minivan was found around 11 a.m. Tuesday down an embankment off Cedar Creek Road in rural Makanda. They say after a preliminary investigation, it appears the minivan failed to negotiate a right-hand curve, left the roadway and struck a tree, eventually catching fire.

By the time police arrived, the fire was burnt out. Police say they believe the crash happened during the overnight hours between Monday and Tuesday.

One person died and their name is being withheld pending identification. An autopsy is planned for Wednesday afternoon.
